P12 - (Af)fluent patrimony: rivers, communities and rural development

Octávio Sacramento
Humberto Martins

Papers in Portuguese, English, Castellano and French; session in Portuguese.

Rivers are nature and culture. They mean ecology, environment and landscape; they are settings for socioeconomic practices, knowledge, memories and identities. Considering this double patrimonial dimension, they are object (potential or effective) of multiple forms of appropriation by human communities, which represents countless opportunities of territorial transformation. So, we propose here the analysis of the uses, practices and narratives that guide people’s relations with the rivers, and the debate about their incorporation in strategies of rural development.

The panel main idea is based upon two ongoing projects in which we engaged: the Interpretative Center and a documentary film about the Rabaçal River (Northeastern Portugal).
